Bernini's
Canopy (Baldacchino) and Papal Altar
St.
Peter's Basilica
by Gian Lorenzo
Bernini (1633)
The
canopy was made with bronze from the ceiling of the Pantheon and was commissioned
under Urban VIII Barberini.
It
stands 29 meters (95.14 feet) high and is directly over Michelangelo's
Dome, the Papal High Altar, and the Tomb of St. Peter (confessio).
