TRAVEL WARNINGS LINKS:  Highly recommended for those planning trips anywhere.  Even though I am not afraid to fly or travel, I am a firm believer in being aware of the situation in any given country I am wishing to travel to.  Here are two of the best website for the most current information.
 

Department of State Travel Warnings        This website has information for all regions (not always most up-to-date, though), just click on the country you're interested in.
U.S. Mission to Italy     This website has specific travel information and alerts for travelers wanting to travel specifically to Italy.
U.S. Transportation Security Administration For U.S. citizens, new and additional security procedures must be in place at all U.S. airports prior to December 31, 2002.  Check the TSA website (click here) out for more tips on packing your luggage.

    ENIT (Italian State Tourist Board).  This is Italy's official tourist board, available in several languages that include a huge databank of museums (descriptions and hours are in Italian) and hotels (that list phone, fax, services and price ranges), listed alphabetically for the area in which you wish to visit through the use of clickable maps to regions and then to certain cities within that region.

Rome

Virtual Rome An excellent site maintained by Andrea Pollett of Rome.  It contains historical articles covering the Talking Statues, the Pope's Corridor ("passetto"), a chronological timeline of ancient structures in Rome, Minerva's "Chick", unusual examples of early Italian language, old wall inscriptions in the city center, the conflict between two great architects, Tiber Island, Rome's ghetto, language and poetry, and mouth-watering Italian recipes.  His most recent addition is an excellent essay with wonderful pictures of the 13 ancient obelisks of Rome, Rome's Walls, and much more.

 

Teach Yourself Italian Teach Yourself Italian is another useful site to visit hosted by my friend Andrea Pollett of Rome.
 

   Rome's 22 Districts (rioni)   Again, my friend, Andrea Pollett, has put together this fabulous webpage on Rome's 22 rioni (districts), providing a virtual and somewhat unusual tour of Rome's central districts.  Well worth looking at.

  Greeting Cards from Rome. The Roma Collection features greeting cards whose themes are inspired by Roman subjects (fountains, churches, night views, legends, etc.).  Pictures on the cards are taken by Andrea Pollett.  Nice and a great gift to send to someone who loves the Eternal City.

  Blue Spirit Jewelry - One of my favorite jewelry chains ever.  Well worth looking at if you've left behind something you wished you had purchased!  This particular franchise is based in the U.K.

 

RomaCulta  is a cultural association and organizes thematic guided tours in Rome and helps the traveler in optimizing their journey to Rome.  It specializes in providing cultural guided tours and city walks and also includes a wonderful historic photo gallery of old photographs of various places and landmarks in Rome.

whatsonwhen.com   whatsonwhen.com is a fantastic website I found that lists all sorts of events happening in Rome (as well as in other cities) at any given time during the year.  An incredible site you should check out if you are wanting additional information as to what is happening in Rome during the time you wish to visit.

 

Transit in Rome  Transit in Rome is another fantastic website hosted by my friend Andrea Pollett with fantastic information, pictures, and maps.

Fountains of Ancient Rome -  A very nice web site about the fountains of ancient Rome and the Papal influence surrounding those fountains.  Quite a nice web site to view if you are interested in knowing more about this subject.

On-line clickable maps of Rome There are two great on-line clickable maps of Rome that I have found on the Internet that are fun surfing.  They are:

http://members.tripod.com/pahoahi/italy/romemap/      Excellent!  This is a map of greater Rome.  You can zoom in to see details of the streets, the inner city, including 3D renderings of major buildings, landmarks, churches, etc.  Great for those who have a vague idea of where something may be located or to just click on a segment and go from there.

Apartments in Rome - Rome Rents.Rome Rents offers apartments, flats, studios, and accommodations in Rome, for self-catering vacation rentals.

Roma 2000 Roma 2000  Museums and building information, hotels, restaurants, mass transport, shopping, maps, itineraries.

 

   Click on the icon to the left to visit a most impressive website on St. Peter's Basilica.  It has an amazing interactive floorplan with images as well as drawings of the Necropolis, St. Peter's Tomb, Constantinian Basilica, and Caligula's/Nero's Circus.  The interactive floorplan is well worth visiting.

 

  Vatican Museums   An major award-winning site by christusrex.org.  A massive site with a lot of papal-oriented information and information on Vatican City.  A splendid and comprehensive photo collection of the artworks in the Museums, including the Sistine Chapel and the Raphael Rooms.  It even has a link to The Lord's Prayer in 255 languages!  To get to the Vatican Museums link, scroll down until you see Vatican Museums and click on it.  You will not be disappointed.  Let it download because there are a lot of wonderful images to see.   In quite a few languages, but when you call up the site, it is in English.

  Greenwich 2000  Massive and very interesting site on Jubilee 2000, including preparations being made around the world for the millennium celebration, Christian festivals in connection with Jubilee 2000, Pope John Paul II's message on Jubilee 2000, a picture of the Jubilee 2000 Sculpture that will be erected in Rome, and much, much more.  Very impressive and informative site for those interested in the subject.

RomaClick.com Rome hotels by RomaClick.com, a comprehensive guide to Rome with online hotel booking service, map, restaurants, happenings, and exhibitions.  Want to rent an apartment, guest house, residence, or check out what is currently on exhibit?  You might want to check this website out.

Moving to Italy    Escapeartist.com is an excellent resource on moving to Italy.  It has a list of helpful websites regarding immigration procedures, books on moving to Italy, jobs, international moving companies, basic information about moving to Italy, etc.

   Nerone's The Insider's Guide to Rome. This website contains various tourist information, services, and events in Rome.  Nerone is a newspaper that is distributed weekly free in Rome.  Also contains daily pictures of life in Rome.  Check the site out for what's currently happening in Rome.

 

Rome Made to Measure  Rome Made to Measure is also hosted by Sergio Caggia of Nerone's The Insider's Guide to Rome.  He can provide personalized tours of Rome and its countryside and private walks, as well as provide tour preparation, help with hotel reservations, and a host of other travel needs.

 

The Vatican (The Holy See) The latest information on John Paul II's journeys as well as information on his background, information on The Roman Curia, Vatican News Services, The Vatican Museums, Jubilee 2000, and the Vatican Archives.  Very rich in Catholic information and doctrine as well as papal letters and papers.  In many languages.
 

The Church of Santa Susanna     This website lists up-to-date information regarding Papal Audiences with a form in which to fill out to get General Audience (Wednesday) tickets.  It also provides other valuable information, both about the Church of Santa Susanna and Rome in general.

 

lonely planet on-line  Destination Rome   A site by Lonely Planet On-line on what to see, famous and not so famous.  If you have trouble getting on from this link, use the following link http://www.lonelyplanet.com  and then click on Europe and then choose Rome.

 

I Love Rome  A great site by alphanet.it with a street map database area by area, various maps and views, art, culture, buses and Metro, accommodations, and more.

 

Stazione Termini    This is Rome's main train station.  It is a MUST website for those who are entering and exiting Rome via train, with a lot of very useful information, interactive locator maps, etc.

 

  Aeroporti di Roma runs both of Rome's airports, the international airport at Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci International Airport) for international and domestic travel, and Ciampino Airport, for domestic and charter flights.  This website has very useful information on both airports, including maps, facilities, and useful telephone numbers.  Click on site map at top right for the airport you are looking for, and then the appropriate airport listing for additional information.  (Click on the logo.)

Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (Fiumicino)    Fiumicino International Airport is the airport most travelers will arrive at.  Another informative website for Rome's major airport for international flights.

 

Airport Shuttle    Airport Shuttle is a very useful site for people who wish to utilize an airport shuttle service between Rome's Fiumicino Airport or Civitavecchia (Port of Rome) into Rome.  Check it out.

 

Ferrovie dello Stato  Ferrovie dello Stato (Italian Rail Service)   Information regarding Italian rail travel including timetables and fares, services available at the main Italian train stations, Italian travel agencies, and much more.

 

Trenitalia Trenitalia (Train Italia) is a very informative website about train travel in Italy and to other parts of Europe, including timetables and an on-line ticket office.  Very useful for those traveling by train.

 

ATAC ROMA    ATAC Roma is the public transportation system in Rome, very informative with timetables, bus routes, and other useful information.

 

Appian Line    Appian Line is a bus coach tour operator serving Italian destinations and has useful information for those wishing to travel via coach to various destinations, or to take bus tours.  They also have travel consultants on this website.

 

  Roma Online   This site (one of two with the same name) is through romaonline.net.  It contains maps, tourist guide, information on art, leisure, shopping and business, and sports.

 

Sandro's Dwelling   An interesting site maintained by Sandro Borsari on ancient Rome, museums, jubilee year, general information, accommodations, and more.  Nice links to other sites as well.

 

Roma Online.com Roma Online This Roma Online site (the second with the same name) is maintained by roma-online.com and contains useful information on moving to and living in Rome, and visiting the Eternal City.  Also information on apartments, general information, accommodations, and a wonderful street database online.  Also 10% restaurant discounts.  Check this site out.

 

  Realitas Virtualis Rome.A wonderful site with pictures and AVI movies about Rome's highlights.  Also information on Pisa and Naples.

  La Sapienza  This website is to Rome's major University.  Centuries ago, it was housed in the complex by St. Ivo's church, whence the name S. Ivo alla Sapienza. Later, it moved to a much wider area and became what it is today.
 
 

  Christian Catacombs of Rome Gives an outline, history, and importance of the catacombs as historical evidence of the life and martyrdom of the early church.  A very interesting site.

Rome Hotel Directory  Rome Hotel Directory  A comprehensive directory of Rome's hotels.  It may not show the lower-priced hotels but worth checking out if you have the time and don't know where you want to stay or how much you want to spend on a room.  Also links to hotel directories in other European countries as well as other cities in Italy.

Hotel de Russie  Hotel de Russie is located in the heart of Rome overlooking Piazza del Popolo and is the epitome of luxurious accommodations and breathtaking views of the piazza.  Complete with gardens, exquisite dining, spa, and meeting rooms, if money is less of a concern, this hotel is well worth looking into.  It is also about four blocks from the famed Spanish Steps.

 

EZHostel.com   EZHostel.com lists some lodging options (hotels/hostels, apartments, campsites) in and around Rome and other Italian cities with free on-line reservations.

 

LODGING WEBSITES IN ROME.  Research is the key to getting the best prices for lodging in Rome, and elsewhere in Italy.  You can use your favorite search engine and type in "Lodging in Rome Italy" (or whatever other city you wish in Italy), and a list will pop up and you can search through them, or you can let your travel agent do the research by giving them the price range you wish and area you wish to stay in.  Travel guides provide a good source, too, but usually do not have a huge list to choose from.  Here is a list of websites you may wish to check out regarding lodging in Rome, from convents to hotels, B&B's, apartments, or even a villa (just click on the one you want to take you to that particular site):  Furnishes Homes; Villas/Apartments.  There are several sites with lists of hotels, including:

Irish National Church/Weddings in Rome   St. Patrick's Irish National Church in Rome's website regarding having your wedding in Rome and what you need to do.

 

WEDDINGS IN ROME.  The Paulist Fathers of the Church of Santa Susanna have created a comprehensive website regarding all the things a couple needs to know and do regarding having your wedding in Rome.  There is a lot involved and this website is an essential source before you continue with your plans.  I highly recommend you take a few moments to see what this site has to say.

 

Universal Currency Converter.  An excellent source for up-to-the-minute exchange rates for the currency of where you are versus where you will be visiting.

This site is where you can loosely translate from English into Italian and vice versa, as well as Spanish, German, French, and Portuguese.  You need to use formal English to get the best results.  I have used it to translate Italian back into English and it sometimes doesn't do too well.  But, this is worth trying.  I used it to make different kinds of reservations for Rome and got replies, mostly in Italian as I am sure the sender thought I speak Italian (which I unfortunately don't.)  Check this site out.

Hotel Porta Rossa is the only hotel that I stay at when visiting Florence.  Visit their website by clicking on the hotel icon.  This beautiful hotel was built in 1386 as a hotel, and is Italy's second oldest.  Conveniently located to anywhere in Florence and quite close to the Uffizi Gallery and Ponte Vecchio, is a very short walk from the Nuovo Mercato, and Il Duomo.

UFFIZI Galleria degli Uffizi  A Yahoo! Internet Life 4-Star website.  This is a massive, comprehensive site with Indices of Rooms, Artists, Works, and a Glossary.  Excellent!

fionline.it  Firenze On Line  Information on tourism, art, music, the media, shopping and, of all things, finding a job in Florence (wouldn't that be nice!).  If I could speak Italian, I would check that out in a flash!
