St.
Peter's Basilica Clock
(At the top of the
facade of St. Peter's Basilica, left side,
above the Arch of
the Bells)
There
are two clocks at the extremes of the facade of St. Peter's Basilica at
the top and are the work
of
G. Valadier. They were installed in 1786. The one on the left
side (shown here) displays the time in Rome
and
strikes on the quarter hour, half hour, and on the hour on six bells.
The main bells have a 6-1/2-foot
diameter
and a circumference of 24.6 feet each, and weighs 10 tons. The clock
on the right-hand side of the top
of
the facade displays Greenwich Mean Time.
