Via della Conciliazone toward St. Peter's Basilica
Via
della Conciliazone, the work of the architect Marcello Piacentini (1881-1960),
creates an avenue from Castel Sant'Angelo to St. Peter's Basilica.
The
164-foot-wide street leading to St. Peter's Square from the Tiber is lined
by 28 modern obelisks similar to the one located in St. Peter's Square.
The
great road is called Conciliazione (conciliation) after the agreement
between the Italian state and the Papal state which was signed
on
February 11, 1929. This was a gift bestowed to the Holy See by Benito
Mussolini. The guy in the picture is me (Stuardt).
